John Ewing was born in Camden, New Jersey in 1970. In 1973 his family moved to Burbank, California where his father worked as a cameraman on numerous movies and television programs. After his parents separated in 1976 his mother and siblings relocated to Atlantic City, NJ and later Philadelphia, PA. He attended Highland Regional High School in Blackwood, NJ where he was a member of the All-State Band in both his Junior and Senior years. He then studied drums and percussion with James Atkinson at Glasboro State College (now Rowan University) and privately with Robert Brosh. In 1990 he relocated to Seattle and began performing as a professional musician, recording and touring with numerous rock, funk, reggae and grunge bands. In 1999 he took a break from performing and began studying again with renowned Seattle percussionists John Bishop, this time emphasizing jazz. He has performed with legendary jazz trombonist Julian Priester and saxophonists Bert Wilson & Jessica Lurie. Through his long time friendship with Free Jazz drumming pioneer James Zitro he has further broadened his approach to improvised and avant garde music. John was the founding member and co-leader of the internationally acclaimed jazz sextet Reptet, toured the west coast with The Tipton’s (formerly the Billy Tipton Memorial Quartet) and was a founding member of the powerhouse psychedelic rock band Space Owl.
